USB YPKP Pre-Retirement Training Equips Employees with Entrepreneurial Spirit through Barbershop and Make Up Artist Business

Bandung, 13 January 2026 — Universitas Sangga Buana (USB) YPKP Bandung held a Pre-Retirement Employee Training with the theme “Building a Barbershop and Make Up Artist (MUA) Business”. This activity is the university's strategic step in equipping lecturers and staff entering retirement so they remain productive, independent, and ready for entrepreneurship.

The training was attended by around 85 participants, consisting of 37 Barbershop training participants and 48 Make Up Artist (MUA) training participants. All participants were lecturers and staff of Universitas Sangga Buana YPKP prepared to face retirement with practical skills and entrepreneurial insight.

In his remarks, the Second Vice Rector of Universitas Sangga Buana YPKP, Bambang Susanto, stated that a business cannot be built instantly. According to him, sustainable businesses are born from a long process, experience, and the ability to manage a business consistently.

“Business does not just appear. What matters most is how to manage it, go through the process, and use the experience you have to build a future business,” he said.

He emphasized that retirement should not be seen as the end of productivity, but rather as a new phase to create and develop one's potential in other fields, including entrepreneurship. The years of work experience are considered important capital in building a professional business.

Meanwhile, the Rector of Universitas Sangga Buana YPKP in his remarks affirmed that the barbershop and Make Up Artist sectors are part of the creative industry that continues to grow and has high flexibility. Both sectors are considered to have broad market opportunities even though the level of competition is increasingly tight.

“Although there are quite a number of business players in this field, the opportunities remain open and promising if managed professionally and consistently,” he said.

In the Make Up Artist (MUA) training session, participants received material from Shinta Medianti of Viva Cosmetics. In her presentation, she emphasized the importance of facial skin health as the main foundation for producing maximum makeup. According to her, good makeup is determined not only by technique, but also by healthy and clean skin condition.

Besides the technical aspects, participants were also given an understanding of business opportunities in the makeup services field, which is considered flexible and has broad market potential, especially for formal events, graduations, and weddings.

Meanwhile, the Barbershop training was held with the theme “Building and Developing a Barbershop Business” at the BJB Corner of Universitas Sangga Buana YPKP Bandung. This activity featured Gian Maheswara Syailendra, founder and management of Suma Barbershop, as the speaker. The event was guided directly by Bambang Susanto as the Second Vice Rector of Universitas Sangga Buana YPKP.

In his presentation, Gian shared the business journey of Suma Barbershop, which was started on a small scale and grew rapidly. Starting from a simple business, Suma Barbershop now has six branches spread across Sindang Sirna, Kiara Artha Park, Riung Bandung, Yogyakarta, Malang, and Bali, with a total of around 30 employees.

Gian affirmed that entrepreneurs are born from urgency and a strong desire to prove themselves, not merely to chase quick profits. He emphasized the importance of a resilient entrepreneurial mentality in facing business challenges.

To maintain business sustainability, Suma Barbershop implements several key strategies, such as building Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) from the start, maintaining branding consistency, and conducting continuous evaluation. In addition, marketing strategy is an important factor in expanding business reach and increasing customer loyalty.

He affirmed that the size of capital is not the main factor, but rather commitment, honesty, and the willingness to keep learning in running a business.

Through this Pre-Retirement Training, Universitas Sangga Buana YPKP hopes that participants will have the skills, understanding of business opportunities, and mental readiness to build businesses independently and sustainably during retirement.
